Bridget Dowd [1]Daughter of John Dowd and Ellen Rowan. Born 11 Nov 1832 Loughrea, Galway, Ireland [2].

Her entry is on line 47, and shows she was a 15, a house servant, and from Loughrea in Galway. She could neither read nor write, and her religion was ‘Church of Rome’ (Catholic). There is a Mary Dowd (18) on the previous line. However, I doubt relayed, as can find no reference to a Mary Dowd associated with Bridget, and Mary is from Dingle in Kerry, a significant distance away from Galway. Her husband, Patrick John Edwards had died prior. Parish Register 1832 Parish Register 1832 November, 11 2nd last line Tracing Bridget is proving problematic. Her death certificate has her maiden name as O’Dowd (provided by her daughter Mary Ann. However, all other records show her maiden name as Dowd, which I believe to be correct - with John Dowd and Ellen Rowan as her parents. The names appear to be quite common in Ireland in the early 1800’s, making matching this couple and child difficult (to the point, I have seen, in Ancestry.com, descendents of Bridget ‘matching’ John Dowd to individuals that cannot be her father, as the ages do not match e.g. John would be 12 when Bridget is born). Others have matched Bridget to records for other Bridget Dowds - such as prison records in Ireland, for a Bridget Dowd, born in the same year as this Bridget, but jailed for offences when this Bridget had migrated to Australia many years previous. Other records have her baptised, on the day she is born, in Dublin, about 180km from Loughrea, where she was born. The Ship "Thomas Arbuthnot" arrived in Sydney, New South Wales on 3/2/1850 bringing the Irish Famine Orphans to the Hyde Park Barracks. [1] Hi ColinIt was great to hear from you. OOPS you are a living descendant of
Frederick & Bridget Rashleigh (nee Edwards)!!!!
I enjoyed your site very much and the photos. I didn't know anything on
Bridget's line until I found a site by Chris Balston at
melinga.publishing@@virgin.net but was unable to contact him. I than found
your site. So unfortunately, I don't have anything to add to your line.
Are you interested in going back on the Edwards and Dowd line.
Bridget Angela Edwards was the daughter of Patrick Edwards born 1837
Parramatta, NSW died 1 July 1893 Dalby, Qld. His parents are given as
Patrick Edwards & Mary Pender. After having his family he married Bridget
Dowd b.1836 Loughrea, Galway, Ireland. She died 15 November 1917. Her
parents were John Dowd and Ellen Rowan. Bridget Dowd had married previously
to Michael Gill 1851 Ipswich, Queensland and had children.
I am a descendant of Patrick James Edwards B.1863 and am in contact with
descendants of Ellen Mary Wilson(nee Edwards)b1871. They are siblings of
your great grandmother, Bridget Angela Edwards.
I have only found out in the last couple of days from Fiona Connor who is
married to a descendant of Ellen Mary that Bridget Dowd was an Irish Famine
Orphan who came on the ship "Thomas Arbuthnot" and arrived in Sydney on 3
February 1850 at age 15.
I can send you a PDF file of my research on Bridget Dowd and her
descendants. I did my initial research many years ago and have only took up
the hunt on this line again last week, but with wonderful success, thanks to
your information on the internet and getting back in contact with Ellen
Mary's line.
My only request if you want the PDF file is that you do not put the details
of "living" descendants on the internet from our branches.
I am happy however to give you that information for your personal research.
Once again, wonderful to make contact and hope to hear from you further.
Kind regards
Gina Godden

[3] I am the grandson of Mary Ellen Edwards (Donovan). My grandfather is Michael Gaslevich.
Thank you for your email. Attached are copies of hand drawn family trees as well as a birth certificate for Mary Ellen. We believe her to be the illegitimate daughter of Mary Ann Donovan, and that she adopted the Edwards name when Patrick and Mary Ann married. She may have been adopted by Patrick at some stage but we haven't been able to find any paperwork or information to confirm that theory.
I transcribed the information wrongly, Evelyn was born on the 2 August 1892 in Sandgate, Queensland and died 30 Mar 1976, place unknown at this time.
