Esther Little

In the 1861 UK census, she is listed as living in Bristol with the Hunter family (along with her sister Mary). William Hunt is 30, with his wife Mary 44. They have 4 young (under 7) children. He is listed as a labourer at wholesale grocers. Assuming he has a very low income from his profession, it is unlikely he can afford 2 live in domestic servants. I am wondering if, in fact, they are staying with relatives in Bristol whilst on their (Mary and Esther Little) way to Plymouth to emigrate to Australia.
What leads me to this conclusion is:
The Little sisters are from Newcastle, in the north-east of England.
Their mother’s maiden name is listed as ‘Hunter’, and they are staying in Bristol with a family called ‘Hunt’ - perhaps 1 or other is listed with the incorrect family name, and they are related to the family they are staying with through their mother.
They are staying in Bristol, in the south-west of England, a significant distance from Newcastle.
If the Hunt family coukd afford 2 domestic servants (unlikely), it would make more sense to have them fro the Bristol area, rather than from Newcastle, a massive distance away.
A few months later both sisters leave for Australia from Plymouth, and Bristol would be a logical stop on the way to Plymouth from Newcastle.

In August 1927, Harry Rashleigh died at Bundaberg. (this appears to be incorrect, and actual death was 12 Dec 1933)

He was 96 and had lived in this area during the early pioneering days. He was born in Truro, Cornwall in 1831 and became an accomplished wood-worker.

At age 18 he sailed for Australia aboard the `Warren Hastings` and arrived at Moreton Bay. The ship foundered on its retum journey.

After a short stint in the Ipswich Railway work shops he went bush and arrived at Jimbour.

He worked at horse breaking and carrying on the station. Some time later he and a mate set up a sawpit at Range`s Bridge said to be the first in the district. They supplied the timber for many well-known buildings in Dalby including the Greenbank Hotel. As a sideline they built a big punt and in flood times ferried teams across the river. The QN bank, the Plough Inn and Range`s Bridge Hotel were built from the timber they cut. Some of that timber may survive today in the old building that was part of St Columba`s School.

After some years he teamed up with Dan Corkhill working as a wheelwright.

But red cedars in the Bunya Mountains attracted his attention and he went there to become a sawyer at the Horse Gully sawpits; among the others there were Joseph and Gertrude Carbines.

He witnessed the tragic event of Gertrude losing her life in childbirth. Though Joseph had gone for a doctor, they were too late to save the mother and child.

All his life he remembered the incident- stating the child had died first and that it was a boy.

[3] Hi, and thanks for getting in touch!

I am not researching the Rasleighs as such. My interest is in Jessie Margaret Mary Monica Moreland (my cousin twice removed) who married Lawrence Lynagh, and their descendants.

I think Marie Elaine Lynagh must be a different woman (maybe a cousin) to the person you know, as a couple of people told me have given me details of Marie Elaine Shearer (nee Lynagh)'s death and one of those people was her son Alisdair Shearer (who would surely know!).

I attach a tree and a report on what I know of this family (from Rashleigh down). I hope it might fill in some gaps to you. I would be very interested to know anything about Jessie Margaret Mary Monica Moreland and her Lynagh descendants.

[4] Dear Colin - I've just come across your family history site, because of the inclusion of Esther Rashleigh nee Little. I am descended from Esther's sister, Anne, who married Thomas Gibson and settled at Goondiwindi.

We have not got very far, to date, in following up Anne and Esther's ancestors. From her death certificate (and those of her sisters) her mother's name was Anne Hunter, born in Newcastle. I'd be very interested to know any further information you've been able to unearth on the ancestry of Anne Hunter (and on any of Esther's other relatives - other than that her two sisters both came to Australia and her youngest brother died in childhood, I know very little about her siblings other than what is in Census records and postal/business directories). I am happy to exchange what information I have.

When I started tracing the family history some time ago I corresponded with several of the Rashleigh descendents in Qld but we lost touch over the years.

[30] Colin,

I don't really have any more info on Clarinda (ie. DOB etc) but can
give you details of her and Edward's decendants - that's the Lynagh
clan and bigger than Ben Hur! Yes Michael Lynagh's Great-grand-father
was Edward's brother. I've never met him but have been getting his
phone calls for 20 years! and people now have a fighting chance of
being able spell my surname - thanks to him.

Everyone with the name Lynagh (at least in this country) is related by
decent from John Lynagh (B. 1830 Milford, Donegal, Ireland; D. Dalby,
Qld 23/9/1909) and Ellen Murphy (B.1834 Leighlin Bridge, Carlow,
Ireland D. 3/6/1915 Dalby, Qld). About the Rashleighs, I know nothing
other than that Clarinda married a Lynagh and became my grandmother.
You might like to take a trip to Dalby as I found saome Lynaghs and
few Rashleighs buried ther on a trip recently. There are 2 cemetries -
needless to say the old one is the place to go.

Let me know if you're interested in any more info.

Marie

PS. Clarinda is my middle name - I'm the only one to have inherited
it. It's interesting to know that she used Clara instead!

[31] Hi,

I was doing a search on my surname and came accross your site - I think
you'll find that Clara was actually Clarinda who married my grandfather
Edward Patrick (b: 4/12/1858) on 26/7/1890.

Hope this helps.
