ANNUAL MEETING OF GUMERACHA A.H. AND F. SOCIETY. The annual meeting of the Gumeracha A.H. and F. Society was held in the Hall, with the President, Mr J.B. Randell in the chair.
It was decided to have an additional section at the next show, namely one for children's pets.
After lengthy discussions on membership fees, entrance fees, etc., it was decided to raise the admission fee to the show from 2/- to 3/- for adults. The Society has a credit balance of £301, including a £25 profit for the past year
The Society had a very windy and dusty day for the last show with fire hazard very high and this accounted in no small degree for the comparatively small profit for the year.
The 1953 show will be held on March 28. Officers elected for ensuing year:-
Patrons: Hon. T. Playford, A.E. Cornish, W.F. Mausolf, L.J. Bishop, D.C. Hynes, A.J. Hill, and Dr Stratmann. President, Mr H.A. Hanna. Vice Presidents Messrs C. Jamieson, J.J. Stephenson, G. Michalk, W.L. Hanna, and V.A. Lee. Secretary and Treasurer, Mr E.C. Jamieson. Auditors, Messrs K.M. Cornish and S. Hastwell. Messrs D.M. Standen, J.G. Lemmey, and J.B. Randell were made life members.

GUMERACHA 20th ANNUAL SHOW PRIZE LIST.
Fodder: Judge G.L. Hampton remarked that Wheaten and Oaten hay classes were both of good quality. A little extra care in selecting sheaves for exhibition could have influenced the results. Baled hay class had six entries. First prize bale contained too much Barley grass; second prize had insufficient clover. Two entries were mouldy. Again greater care needed in selecting entries. E. Sandercock, C. Sandercock, V.A. Lee, D.C. Hynes.
Vegetables: Mr C.E. Filsell, of Forest Range said he was very pleased with the display and commended exhibitors "I would recommend in future that potatoes be washed as it tends to show defects." Prizewinners were: A.J. Parish, F.M. Green and Sons, W.A. Gray, V. Didiano, L. Naismith, Mrs E. Bleeze, E. Sandercock, H.J. Schlein, A. Dallow, L.S. Crowhurst, L.D. Cornish, H.E. Verrall and Son, Ralph Sandercock, N.G. Gallas, Miss E.B. Cornish.
Knitting & Needlework Open Classes: Judge M. Wilson said that in the Open Section there were some beautiful pieces of work, which helped to raise the standard of the local section. Mrs S.T. Elliott, E.M. Potter, Mrs M. Harnden, Miss G.A. Thiele, Mrs C.E. Cornish, O.T. Braun were the main prizewinners.
Local Section: Judge M. Wilson said the standard of work was very high especially in the embroidery which was most pleasing. The knitting section was rather poor no doubt owing to cost of wool. In all a very good show of work. "I was pleased to
see new sections, which will give still more interest." Mrs J. Moore, M. Farley, Mrs Monica Atkinson, L.D. Cornish, K.S. Cornish, Judy Nash, Mrs L. Evely, Miss M. Randell, J. Bleeze, D.J. FUTURE OF GUMERACHA SHOW ASSURED. Minister Enthusiastic About Display. Hon. A.W. Christian, Minister of Agriculture, was most enthusiastic about the record display of produce at Gumeracha Show on Saturday. Mr Christian said "one would expect to see here the very best fruit and vegetables display in the State and the exhibition measures up to standard."
Mr Christian was introduced and asked to open the Show by Mr C. Jamieson, Vice-President, who apologised for the absence of the President, Mr H.A. Hanna, due to ill health. Mr Jamieson said this year's Show provided one of the best displays yet seen at Gumeracha. The apple and pear exhibit was among the largest in the State.
He particularly directed the attention of patrons to the British breeds sheep section which was introduced last year and had grown considerably at the Show.
Before officially opening the Show, Mr Christian added to the remarks of Mr Jamieson "Despite the handicaps suffered by growers this year," he said, "some sections have been better supported than ever before."
Quality was essential if Australia was to hold her markets, continued the Minister, and this applied to all phases of primary production. His Department was doing everything possible to assist in this direction and any new developments resulting from research were immediately passed on to the man on the land.
Mr Christian paid high tribute to the ladies of the district for their fine display of arts and crafts. Mr W.L. Hanna proposed a vote of thanks to the Minister.
The 22nd annual show of the Society was greatly improved in almost every respect.
Financial membership of the Society (worth £140) would probably exceed that of the majority of country Shows in S.A. on a population basis.
The perfect day on Saturday attracted a crowd which numbered between 1500 and 2000 people and accordingly gate takings (excluding members and their families) rose to £86.
New Feature in District Exhibit. As usual the centre of attraction in the Hall display was the District Exhibit which was again prepared by the local Agricultural Bureau.
Almost every item of primary produce and any other samples of district production were included in this non-competitive exhibit. Latest addition and one which was the subject of much comment was the peanut plant provided by Mr Ellis Sandercock. While on a recent visit to Queensland Mr Sandercock gathered a number of peanut plants and planted them on his farm at Gumeracha. Although the nuts had not quite reached maturity it was obvious that this plant will flourish in the district and could easily provide a useful sideline for district farmers in the future.
Entries for the British breeds in the sheep section were increased by 30 this year, and included good support for the new classes of Polwarths. Although this was only the second occasion on which sheep have been shown at Gumeracha, it would appear that the section will become an important part of the Show in the future.
Horses in action again provided an interesting and entertaining spectacle. Four classes mainly for local horses had been deleted from the programme, but entries were equal to last year. There were two mishaps during the afternoon, but fortunately
nobody was seriously injured.
Support for the dog section was better than last year, but still did not reach expectations. The Society has affiliated with the Canine Association and the judge, Mr H.V. Carn, suggested that the Society should apply to the Association to hold a Championship dog show at Gumeracha next year.
The non-competitive display of schoolwork by children of district schools was very attractive and occupied quite a substantial area in the Hall. In this section the Society makes a donation of £2/2/- to the committee of each school participating.
Arts and Crafts had more support than has been the case at other Shows held recently in Hills districts. There was particular support for photography classes whilst the picture from a calendar class drew nineteen very good standard entries.
Cookery entries were three times greater than at last year's Show and the display was a credit to those responsible. Exhibits were neatly arranged on trestle tables and covered with cellophane which was appreciated by both patrons and exhibitors alike. Mrs Y. Michalk, who won the cookery trophy in the last two shows and was attempting to win the trophy outright this year, was unlucky to be defeated narrowly on this occasion.
A remarkable feature about Gumeracha Show is that prize money is always available on the day of the Show. On Saturday it was ready for payment at 3.30 due in no small measure to the efforts of Mr and Mrs D.M. Standen, who voluntarily assist in this direction each year. Mr Standen is an ex-secretary of the Society. Incidentally, the present secretary, Mr E.C. Jamieson, who does an extraordinarily good job, is also an honorary secretary. [30/3/1955 1bc.]

GUMERACHA SHOW PRIZE LIST.
FODDER. Exhibitors made a good competition in the green lucerne class, but other classes were not keenly supported.
Among those who won prizes were A. Schliebs, O.W. Gladigau, E. Sandercock, D.C. Hynes and Ivan Randell. [30/3/1955 5ad.]

OPENING MATCHES IN TVFA. The season opened under ideal playing conditions. Early opening rains saw the ovals nicely grassed and ground conditions firm.
Attendances were quite good for the opening series.
All clubs were not up to full strength having been weakened by army call-ups and seasonal work on the land.
The promotion of B grade and junior players to the opposition of seasoned players in A grade showed most were in need of a match, but some good games were played. Margins in scores do not truly indicate the play.
GUMERACHA v. LOBETHAL. When Gumeracha were at home to Lobethal the match was even until half time when the home team were trailing only 14 points behind their opponents. Scoring had been low, but accurate kicking through the big sticks showed that Lobethal had notched up 7 goals 6 behinds to 5 goals 4 behinds by Gumeracha. The third quarter saw Lobethal make a definite breakthrough, outplay the Magpies' defences and by particularly fine kicking for goal conclude the term with 14 goals 9 behinds to 6 goals 7 behinds.
The final term witnessed good football with Gumeracha battling on. Lobethals, however were the better team on the day and the final score when the bell went was Lobethal 17 goals 12 behinds, Gumeracha 8 goals 8 behinds.
Goalkickers.óLobethal; B. Zilm 5, G. Jaensch 2, R. Schapel 2, J. Weston 1, R. Stansbury 3, G. Dearman 2, C. Newman 1, T. Graeber 1. Gumeracha: K. Sandercock 2, G. Cornish 2, K. Norsworthy 2, K. Bleeze, H. Symonds each 1.

GUMERACHA TENNIS TOURNAMENT. There were good entries and some good tennis witnessed in the Gumeracha tournament. The finals scores were as follows:-

Some students who I remember
It is sixty-eight years since I started at Gumeracha Primary School, and my short-term memory is now often unreliable. Yet, given a longer period, it is surprising how many faces and names that I remember. Apart from attending a re-union in 1982, I have had
very little contact with Gumeracha or the students of the time, but I have recorded below the names of those who come readily to mind. I have included nicknames (obviously without inferring disrespect). The names are not in any order, and are faces that came before me randomly ‘out of the mist of time’ in my musings: -
Clarke Graham (Sparkey)Dainty Sylvia
Dohnt MickyPople John (Ratty)

The above list is limited to students of about my own age. Graham Clarke was my closest friend, and we spent a great deal of time together. We had similar interests, and were both keen on making models. When I asked Graham once what he thought was
his greatest interest, he replied, ìanything in miniatureî. I nodded my feigned understanding, having no idea what the words ‘in miniature’ meant.
Unfortunately Graham and I lived a considerable distance apart, so we were never able to work on combined projects. We were both keen on model aeroplanes, and we would work at home on our various models, and talk endlessly about our projects in free time at school or at any other times we were together. It was wartime, so we were frustrated by an inability to obtain generally acceptable materials, particularly for flying models. For example, it was a rare occasion that we were able to obtain balsa and
rice paper, basic prerequisites for flying models.
Other close friends were Ian Sandercock, who rode to school from Kenton Valley on a horse, and Donald Bell. (Donald was actually closer to my young brother, Robert, but living next door to each other, we spent a considerable amount of time together).

We often visited Roy and Mrs. Monfries, Mr. and Mrs. "Elle’ Sandercock (and Ian).

Two other boys rode their pushbikes to school - Ian Sandercock, a five kilometre ride from his father's farm at Kenton Valley, and Mick Dohnt around the 'pub corner' and the length of the main street.

The Mannum 'Blue Federal' bus, powered in these wartime years by a Wishart Gas Producer, picked up students from Mannum, Milendella, Palmer and Tungkillo. After dropping off its student load it went on to Gumeracha. Ian Sandercock rode over three km from 'Nether Hill' farm at Kenton Valley and Grantley Cornish joined Ian about half-way to Gumeracha where they parked their bikes in Mr Tommy Bleeze's shed.

GUMERACHA TAKES SEMI. 'B' GRADE. Except for a period in the second quarter when Lobethal scored three goals to bring them within five points of their rivals, Gumeracha always looked the better team on the day. Their bigger players proved too experienced for the young Lobethal side, although the latter revealed some excellent flashes of play. Gumeracha applied pressure from the first bounce to end the quarter with 3-5 to one goal by Lobethal, but the latter team pressed strongly in the second term to outscore Gumeracha 3-1 to 2-1. SECOND SEMI. PREVIEW. There is an air about a Lobethal-Gumeracha clash which pervades the TV football world that no other match can incur. When such an engagement occurs during the major round, spectators are assured of a grim struggle which creates a sense of suspense not lifted until the last kick is taken. Once again these two teams will meet on the Birdwood oval next Saturday for the right to contest the grand final. He would be bold who would confidently predict the outcome of Saturday's match. Gumeracha has twice been defeated by Lobethal this season but in each instance the winning margin did not suggest any definite superiority of Lobethal, e.g., seven and six points respectively.
However, the fact that they have won these two matches, and their unbeaten record for the season, gives Lobethal a psychological advantage. Against this can be reckoned the fact that Lobethal has not played under match conditions for three weeks, having drawn a bye in the last minor round series. One thing which can be taken for granted, the game will be played at a terrific pace throughout. Both sides are equipped with more than a fair sprinkling of high marking exponents, but Lobethal may have the edge in this sphere. Gumeracha's play on short-passing style which can be devastatingly effective if not checked will be opposed to a long kicking game of Lobethal. Highlights of the match will be the duels between Lobethal's star centre half forward, B. Zilm, and his opposing half back, presumably R. Fuller, and the high-flying centreman R. Karutz, of Lobethal, against K. Hanna, clever pivot and leader of Gumeracha. Perhaps the fate of the game will depend on how Lobethal's defence, always a solid one, can cope with Gumeracha's goal-getting specialist, K. Sandercock, who is in good form at present. Both sides will be led by astute captains, each of whom are keen students of the game. Lobethal is selected to win but the vagaries of football fortunes make the choice a difficult one, especially when two teams are so evenly matched. Umpire O.W. Buttery will be in charge of the game.
Mt Pleasant is chosen to defeat Mt Torrens in the 'B' grade curtain-raiser semifinal. The latter team are capable of springing a surprise on their rivals but Mt Pleasant\ has twice defeated the redlegs this season in the three games played, and at full strength should do so again. The umpire will be L. Bugg. [21/8/1952 6c-f.]
